Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”
This is a thoughtful and very engaging dramatization of what qualities and choices made Lincoln such a great president. It's probably so successful because it chooses only one month in his life to focus on, although it's so fascinating that I would gladly watch an entire 20-hour miniseries made with the same great cast and filmmakers. Daniel Day-Lewis is outstanding, but when isn't he? The usual elements of a great Spielberg production are present -- composer John Williams, photographer Janusz Kaminski, editor Michael Kahn -- but it's the script by Tony Kushner that deflty condenses Doris Kearns Goodwin's book into a manageable 2.5-hour film that is the key to its success. If I have any cause to complain, it's the superfluous coda; the movie goes on for three more scenes than it should.

Samir Mehta: “It ruled.”
Maybe the best Spielberg movie (or tied with Munich) ever. A nuanced and deep historical study with very little of the grandiosity normally embedded into Hollywood.
