The Search for General Tso
Scott Hardie: “It was ok.”
I've never wanted to eat Chinese food so badly as I do after watching this. Here's a 72-minute documentary about the history of Chinese-American food, particularly focused on the bastardized Taiwanese dish that we call General Tso's chicken. It's full of mouth-watering slow-motion photography of the food being prepared, and mentions many elements of the cross-cultural cuisine from fortune cookies to P.F. Chang's, but it doesn't amount to much, because there's really not enough material of interest to fill the running time. Even the story of how the inventor of General Tso's chicken and other famous dishes was robbed of his creation doesn't go very far. Still, it's a pleasant enough little movie if you love Chinese food, with a playful Asian-inspired surf rock score by Simon Beins.
