Scott Hardie: “It ruled.”
If this movie wasn't quite as striking as Juno, Up in the Air, and other films by Diablo Cody and/or Jason Reitman, maybe it's because they set the bar so high already. Charlize Theron is very gutsy to play someone so mean and so specifically dysfunctional, the grisly result of years of self-denial and alcoholism, but the movie makes it clear in two painful conversations (with her parents and with an adoring former classmate) that it's really the enablers in her life who are to blame for her being a monster. This ugly character study has been promoted as a black comedy but it feels to me like a drama, and a good one.
