More weather and anime

So the flood is on its way out, but not without bringing a little excitement. It was time yesterday to go 50 miles to the farm for Darrell's grandma's 90th birthday. Foolishly, I chose our usual route instead of the alternate route that was high and dry 2 years ago when the water was 2 feet higher. This should teach me to study up on any roads I intend to drive on before I drive on them. I had no idea they kept the highway open in those kinds of conditions. After a while, the traffic slowed to a crawl, but this still didn't really prepare me for what happened next... the road went underwater and stayed that way for miles. Checking the internet after the fact, it said that it was an average of 3 to 4 inches deep for 2 miles... but it seemed more like it was up to a foot or more at times and lasted for 10 miles... Er OK, I guess they finally decided to close it, but it seemed to me like they were a bit late on that decision... http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/315608/
The engine was shuddering at one point and I thought it was going to stall. That would have been bad. There was a strong current washing cross the highway and into the ditch. I dunno. I guess my Prozac does not completely remove all emotion or, some would say, my over-dramatic nature. I was scared. Anyway we got off the highway at the earliest opportunity and figured it was probably best to continue on west toward the farm rather than turn south and go right back through the mess that looked as bad or worse for everyone coming the other way! So the country roads were actually fine and we got there (and back on the alternate route) with no further incident. But we let Darrell's dad and grandma assume we took the sane route both ways.... to try to cut down on the embarrassing questions we would receive...
In other news, we borrowed Evangelion from the library. At first I didn't understand the fuss about this show at all. It seemed like your typical dumb Saturday morning cartoon about giant robots (but with gratuitous nudity). Towards the end we finally got what all of the fuss is about. Shinji is a really good character. He is a lot like Darrell. We even liked the final two episodes that some people say are horrible. We thought the series wouldn't be nearly as good without those episodes. We also borrowed the 1.11 movie and will get other materials whenever we go back on Netflix.

Cartoon boobies. What can I say? Guys want to see naked flesh even if it's cartoonized. The internet is chock-a-block with cartoon porn. One advantage to being a geezer is that hormone thing no longer makes me think things like that are worth pursuing. "Hmmm...naked Wilma Flintsone - I want me some of that" is not a thought I worry about harboring.

Yeah I always hear that water will kill a car. I wouldn't have wished to go through, but there was bumper to bumper traffic going forward and nobody turning back (it was the interstate after all) and a cop parked there with lights flashing as if to make sure that everyone goes on through :P. I think I exaggerated about the 10 miles, it was only a few miles but it was such slow going. And it was only really deep for a short period.

I guess I mean the fan service then. It is not explicit nudity but it is clearly meant to titillate :). I do like the show. We are rewatching now, since we noticed the other elements more than the character development when we watched the first episodes originally.

So last week Darrell's friend Mike discovered on Wikipedia that Galesburg, North Dakota, a town near where Darrell and Darrin grew up and where they often hung out at the cafe, actually has the third tallest structure in the world. I find the photo on the wikipedia page rather amusing, by the way, due to its unusual dimensions. Upon discovering this, Mike, Darrell, and Darrin immediately drove out to pay the tower a visit. Correction to my earlier post - we have now seen almost to the end of season 2 of QAF (Darrell decided to watch it after all) and it seems only season 1 is really amazing. Perhaps it gets better again later, I don't know. Is it any coincidence that season 1 is the one copied almost directly from the British version? Go »

I'd be pretty scared in that situation too - not just from immediate danger, but also of long-term damage to the car from being partially submerged that long, since driving through flooded ditches in Illinois really did a number on my last car. Glad you made it ok and with no ill effects.
Giant robots, gratuitous nudity... I can at least guess what the fuss is about. :-)
